This month, we’re focusing on hardwood and sustainable materials that are “just like hardwood” in many aspects. In one of our earlier blogs, we featured Kebony, one of the newest materials that we’ve been using in deck construction. Kebony wood is beautiful, highly durable and sustainable. Kebony is sourced from FSC-Certified forests, can stand up to the harshest conditions, and is resistant to insects, fungi and decay. Kebony wood is an enhanced wood of superior quality (yet not a hardwood), and it’s cost-effective. In fact, Kebony deck boards can last 50 years or more. In addition to decks, we’ve used Kebony in bench and walkway construction in both residential and commercial settings.

Ipe is a beautiful exotic hardwood that we have been using in a similar fashion as Kebony. It’s an extremely durable and long-lasting (up to 75 years) hardwood from Central and South America. Also known as Brazilian Walnut, this incredibly dense wood is some of the strongest in the world and is resistant to insects, rot and decay. It’s also considered Class A fire resistant.

Oak, maple and walnut are among the hardwoods of North America. Known for its attractive grain, Oak (White or Red) is the most popular domestic hardwood flooring. Not only is it fairly durable and long-lasting, it’s readily available and easy to stain. Oftentimes in older homes, rather than ripping up those old Oak floors, we’ll refinish the existing hardwood and bring it back to life, so that homeowners can enjoy the warmth and beauty of their Oak floors for many years to come.

Bamboo, which is sometimes mistaken for hardwood, is actually an evergreen perennial plant in the grass family. This attractive and renewable material is often used in sustainable interior design. Bamboo is trendy, durable and may be stained like hardwood. Bamboo flooring is a popular and less expensive flooring material often used in basements for moisture prone areas as it is resistant to mold/mildew.
